German gay activist Rosa von Praunheim has a huge body of LGBTQ films. Darkroom is a quite intense look at Berlin gay life from a complex trial of Lars's experimentation of a poisonous liquid. From this tragic viewpoint, flashbacks of the protagonist, various witnesses and victims create a labyrinth of gay identities and stories.
Das Portrait eines zutiefst kalten, toxischen Szenarios. Die Angst vor Selbstkonfrontation führt zur bewussten Internalisierung psychologischer Probleme, die im Umfeld der Hauptfigur normalisiert und nicht hinterfragt werden - Homogenität aus Abwehrreflex und eine Art gegenseitige, bewusste Distanz.
Mit viel Geschick, dass man für unzusammenhangslose Stilentscheidungen halten könnte, konstruiert Praunheim eine audiovisuelle Milieuiesierung dieser Geisteshaltung. Die Sets sind elend, selbst in ihren Momenten des Glamours. Der frequentierte Greenscreen ist bewusst - eine Un-Echtheit tritt ein, die eine Art polaren Gegenpol zu den queeren Melodramen bilden, denen der Regisseur oft kritisch gegenüberstand.
Haarsträubend schwache Schauspiel-Leistungen wie diese, sind im Werk von Rosa von Praunheim mannigfaltig zu finden. So richtig überzeugen kann keiner des Ensembles. Ex-TV-Knacki Katy Karrenbauer ist als aggressive Staatsanwältin gar eine völlige Lachnummer. Schlimmer ist aber, dass die vom grade so akzeptablen Protagonisten begangenen Morde völlig emotionslos am Zuschauer vorbei gehen, genauso wie die Motivation des Mörders irgendwie in absolutem Desinteresse untergeht.
Das ist besonders bedauerlich, da es sich um einen Bezug auf einen realen Fall aus dem Jahr handeln soll. Aber Regisseur von Praunheim beschränkt sich lieber darauf, möglichst exploitativ mit Klischees aus der Schwulenszene aufzufallen, und so entsteht sowohl qualitativ als auch auf Ebene einer möglichen Aussage der ultimative Prototyp von filmischem Abfall.

While I did manage to draw some entertainment out of the less surreal moments and some of the cringy, over the top performances, this feels at the same time derivative and wholly original. The green screen work is not only bad, but useless, the editing between scenes and scenarios is nauseating, the acting feel like a result of only doing one unrehearsed take and while the film clearly thinks it doesn't take sides or give answers, it does so all the time.
Darkroom doesn't seem to know what it wants to be, say, or do. This is surrealism and stylistic choices done wrong. Worst thing of all, though: I could have sworn it was two and a half hours long after exiting. It's wasn't. Not my kind of movie. It feels empty and you get no idea why the protagonist is doing what he is doing.
Rosa Von Praunheim constantly feels ripe for a wider appreciation that never comes.
